A telemarketer call led to a dinner table discussion of the tough economy, why people have to work at unpleasant jobs, and whether people were telemarketers during the Great Depression (yes, we saw that Kit Kittredge movie). Daddy took the opportunity to introduce some musical history, too.
Daddy: OK, girls, can you fill in the missing words from this song lyric? "Once I built a railroad, made it run, made it race against _______ ?"
Emma: Time.
Daddy: Good! Now it's Amelia's turn. "Once I built a railroad, now it's done. Brother, can you spare a ________?"
Amelia: GUN!
Times sure have changed.
