The school recommends wheeled backpacks for fourth graders, so with some reluctance we bought Emma a sturdy wheeled backpack with which to carry her textbooks back and forth to school. I loved her backpack last year--it was well-designed and lightweight. This year's "backpack" is also well-designed, but bulky and heavy because of the wheels. I do share the school's desire to protect her back, though.
So you can imagine my dismay when I saw her straining to lug the backpack through the school parking lot by the looped handle at the top. Concerned, I asked her, "Why are you carrying your backpack? It will roll on the ground."
She explained, "If I roll the backpack outside, the wheels will get all dirty. I want it to stay nice for at least two weeks."
She is her daddy's girl...
