I confess, I spent the first few days after the tragedies at VaTech glued to the story, especially once I learned that the killer was an English major. I was at VaTech a few years ago and met many of the faculty members who have been in the news. I was impressed at the time with their scholarship and decency; I'm more impressed now that I know more about their efforts to help a troubled student. I find myself now wondering if something can be learned from the tragedy that will keep my students and me safer.
It's a highly unusual for me to watch violent news stories. Normally, I insist that these stories be viewed when neither the children nor I am around, so I worried about what the kids were taking in. Emma is old enough that she hears about events at school (plus she has been practicing "code red" drills since kindergarten), but Amelia is still so little yet.
Today, I realized that whenever Amelia heard the word "bullet," she thought people were talking about "pull-ups."
I didn't correct her.
