Here's another way parenting changes you: Parents have favorite colors. Even if you don't think you have a favorite color, you will. And favorite colors are very important. Emma knows everyone's favorite color. Grandma's favorite color is blue. Her teacher's favorite color is yellow. Amelia's favorite color is brown. Daddy's favorite color is red.
My favorite color? Orange. One day when we were eating popsicles, I gave Emma her favorite kind of popsicle (red) while I ate the orange one. I actually prefer red flavors myself, but I told Emma that I preferred orange because, well, that's another thing parents do. Anyway, she asked, "Do you like orange, mommy?" and I said "yes," not realizing that I was making such a momentous decision.
Because ever since then, orange has been my favorite color. Notes are written in orange crayon. Pictures are drawn in orange marker. And whenever we see anything orange, Emma happily announces, "That's orange! That's your favorite color, right, Mama?"
And wouldn't you know it--turns out orange IS my favorite color.
